Eurojournal - 2 July 2006

This morning we woke to the sounds of distant cathedral bells. If the traffic was quiet, every now and again we could hear the faint sounds of the choir singing. There are a variety of churches in Cluj. Some are Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, etc. The Unitarian church started at 11 a.m. Then the cathedral bells were not so distant since we are next to the church. We could hear the singing and at times I could hear the minister doing the sermon, most likely in Hungarian (Magyar).

Byron’s birthday went well. It was simple but sweet. We went to the park and rode on paddle boats. We rented two boats and Byron wanted to ride with me and race with James the children. Afterwards we got Chinese food (Byron’s choice). He arrived at the decorated dorm to a fruit salad and the divine chocolate goo. We gave him two phone cards as a gift. He seemed pretty happy. My baby is 15!

I received and email from one of the coordinators at PATRIR. They have a few spots left for the Peacebuilding and Development training in late July. At This will be really valuable in that I can use these skills when I return home. They are also looking for someone to help in the gender center on the 16 day campaign to stop violence against women. So I emailed them and said YES! Tell me when to be there this week! Woohoo!

Happy Birthday, BYRON !!!!!

When you guys return, I look forward to hearing all about your trip - I want to hear from YOU, Byron - a young, bright American guy's take on Europe! I'll be very interested in hearing your impressions - I'll tell you why when the time comes!

Now hello all - thank you, Cecily, for this amazing travel log - I'm gonna be drinking it in - how cool for me to be able to follow your journey! The pics are great, as are your descriptions. What a gift - it makes me happy to be able to actually see you guys in your settings. I put on my gypsy music this morning to celebrate - "Taraf de Haidouks" - they are fantastic! Oh,I'm green with envy, and blue with missing Europe, but ecstatic for you all that you are having this incredible opportunity!! It is so beautiful to read about - I can hear the cathedral bells, which you will hear most everywhere. I never tired of it, even when they use the bells to chime the hour. And the funny way they serve sandwichs - the falafels & such with the fries inside - hey, it saves on containers.

Well, Cecily, I look forward to hearling more - you'll have to elaborate on what you'll be doing at the peace center!

Moi, je vous embrasse tres fort (gotta find all the accent marks on my keyboard so my French will be spelled correctly)until next time!

love,
andrea

I still find it amazing that you are all out there on this giant adventure. Seeing the pics of everyone ( Cecily are you there? ) made me miss the familiar " Hi Elayne " even more so than I already do. I now hope to hear a " Hallo Elayne " when Luna and Liam return. A thought - to give Luna and Liam cameras to shoot a travelog so as to see the world from their vantage point of view. I'm sure they will be settled in very soon as they are great little people. Thanks for the inclusion on your adventure. May the universe lead you all on peaceful paths. Love, Elayne
P.S. Luna, please take Mommy's picture.

So great to hear form you Elayne and Andrea. I miss you both. Elayne, great idea with the pics. I'll hand the camera over to one of the kids today. Byron has his own and has been taking his own pics.

Hey Cecily. I am enjoying your travel blogs very much! It is fun to be along for the adventure with you all! You guys really inspire the gypsy in me. I long to travel more. It sounds like you are having a good time. What is it like to be out of the US? How are people in other parts of the world feeling about America and the crazy people in Washington? I am always curious about that. When I travelled in the past people were always very friendly and curious. I don't know if there has ever been such a terrible president, though. We are doing good here. Staying put for the summer. The girls are in summer camp and Todd is working away, I am doing my Doula stuff and thinking about going back to college. I miss you guys. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BYRON! I can't believe you have a 15 year old Cecily!! Time moves so fast, as the saying goes. It really does. Love and Blessings to you all. Cathy.
